How to clean a humidifier

I posted how to clean a coffee maker and then noticed that I use a humidifier too.  I did some research and found out that humidifiers are a breeding ground for bacteria, mold and other bad stuff for you.  So, if you use a humidifier, here are the steps to clean your humidifier to get rid of all of the bad stuff in there:

Materials needed:
Water
White Vinegar (the cheap store brand one)
Humidifier and all of the parts
Bleach (w/ no additives (like cleansing agents))
Scrubber (or a sponge)
Sauce pan (or the sink w/ a stopper)

  1. Unplug the humidifier.
  2. Remove the water reservoir .
  3. Open up the humidifier removing the base from the motor and filter.
  4. Pour out any water in the base of the humidifier.
  5. Remove the filter from the humidifier.
  6. Put one tablespoon of bleach for every gallon of water your water reservoir can hold.  Fill the reservoir to the top and close the lid and let it sit for about 30 minutes.
  7. Put the filter in the saucepan (or the sink with a stopper) and fill it with white vinegar and water.  Let it sit for about 30 minutes.  **I used pure vinegar in the sink covering about half the filter.  Then flipping it over to the other side after 10 minutes.  Then I filled the sink with water till it caovered the entire filter and let it sit for 20 minutes.
  8. Pour pure vinegar in the base of the humidifier.  Let it sit for about 30 minutes.
  9. Scrub the base of the humidifier and clean any mineral build up in the base.  Rinse the base with water and refill it with water w/ one tablespoon of bleach.  Replace the water reservoir on the base humidifier and let it sit for about 30 minutes.
  10. Remove filter from sauce pan and rinse the filter with water.  Rinse thoroughly so that all of the vinegar has left the filter.
  11. Empty the water reservoir and rinse thoroughly until there is no trace of bleach.
  12. Empty the water in the base and rinse thoroughly until there is no trace of bleach.
  13. Replace the filter.
  14. Replace the motor and cover.
  15. Replace the water tank/reservoir after filling it with cool water. (you can use awesome water if you like =D)
  16. Plug in the humidifier.
And you are done.  Make sure you rinse thoroughly.  This is important.  You do not want to breath in bleach gasses.  If you use your humidifier daily, you should clean your humidifier weekly.  (Knowing humans, you probably will not want to clean it weekly, so at bare minimum, wash it monthly).
